Week starting 21st Feb and Brum League Leamington

Great few weeks of training people. Yesterday at Leamington was such a good day for us all to see that work put to use. The conditions were truly awful but there was light relief that our runners didn’t have to go through the brook as the officials deemed it too dangerous. I’m not entirely sure it has never been dangerous but that was the appeal for many of us. Big shouts out to Amelia Samuels and Louise Hackett who won the overall series honours as Senior Ladies Champion and Junior Ladies Champion retrospectively. I can’t remember that ever being achieved by anyone from wolves and Bilston before with in the ladies or the men. They were backed up with a great squad and turn out. Stand out run yesterday once again from Lucy Calrow who was even quicker to crack open the beer on the team bus!

The men were brought home by Dan Maskew who flexed his talent for downhill running with pure expertise. Destroying anyone around him, taking the shortest, steepest, fastest path on every lap with balance and style. I think there was a few people that needed to come to my downhill sessions and wished they had after yesterday!

He was closely followed in by the superstar junior Louie Lambeth who smashed his best finish yesterday on the hardest course in the series.

So, what’s left of the cross-country season. Next week sees the world famous English National Cross Country in London. A race I have the fondest memories of. Loved the national. If you’ve never ran it or seen it, you’re missing out. The noise is incredible. 1000s of runners sprinting from the start is craziest sound. It’s a mixture of adrenaline and fear! It’s the best of the best fighting it out for the honours. Just medals and a place in the history. See pictures of medals I managed to get my hands on from back in the 1990s! Then if you’ve qualified it will be the Inter Counties for some of you.

But now is the transition time to road and track. You may have seen Abbos post. He is going to concentrate on 3000 - 5000m for those racing the track. His group will centre around Amelia and Louie’s needs. But will be open to anyone else that needs and can run the type of sessions he’s putting on. Like mine his will be about bigger volume totalling 8k on Tuesdays (track) but with the emphasis on fast pace. So, I will be replicating the sessions off the track with the idea of keeping you all together and running my sessions off the whistle or with timekeepers to enable us to split the group into smaller groups on the same circuit. I will also be taking you on the track occasionally to sharpen you up. I would recommend all masters come with me as the track every week will take its toll. But it’s up to you.

Saturdays we will all come together again for a session that compliments Tuesday quicker efforts. This will be over Compton, Aldersley and Bantock to start with.

Dave Norman will be organising Sunday long runs too.
