Week starting 12th January

Well, we seem to have got through the worst of the weather without cancelling sessions and even managed to get in an extra good one on Saturday despite the snow. Kudos to all of you. This week we are back at i54, and on Saturday we’ll be at Aldersley Stadium for some hilly reps. Keep the focus and the faith, it’s challenging out there. If you can’t get out, consider cross training. Jump on a bike, swim, or use the cross trainer. For example, replace a 1-hour run with a 1-hour bike session and aim to match your usual running heart rate. If you can get out, be careful and realistic with what the weather throws at you. January and February are all about building a base, with efforts to support that. Don’t beat yourselves up if you feel sluggish or miss a few runs. Just aim to be as consistent as possible and it will even itself out over time. Tuesday: Warmed up and ready to go, 6.50pm at i54 (JLR, where we did the 400m efforts, see map). 4–6 miles of reps off 75 seconds recovery. The volu...

That’s a wrap for Christmas, and you have all trained and raced well over the festive period. We find ourselves in 2026 with lots of individual targets for the year, and some exciting TRX news on the horizon - more on that in the coming weeks. 2026 will see the same format: Tuesday and Saturday sessions, Thursday easy or tempo, and Sunday meet-ups for a group run. It would be lovely to organise a New Year outing for food, too. A few of us are racing the Staffs Half in March, and many of you are racing the Manchester Marathon. It would be ace to get to these races and either run, or show support for the group. Before it creeps up on you, start thinking about spring or summer now. If you’re a club runner, begin exploring the possibilities of track races. Pester your clubs and team managers for dates and get signed up. I know Greg at W&BAC will be looking for Masters athletes, and Noel will be recruiting runners to represent W&BAC on the track, too. It’s a great way to get so...

Another good week of training in the bag, and some more strong racing. Great to see you all out and about at the Turkey Trot. Excellent results for Tettenhall and BRC working alongside the Wolves lot. It is not the easiest of courses and a good test for everyone. Here is the Christmas and New Year schedule: MERRY CHRISTMAS PEOPLE! Tuesday 23 December: Warmed up and ready to go, 6.50pm, Science Park. Session: 4–6 mile reps off 90 seconds recovery, depending on what you are training for. Drop me a message if you need guidance. Friday 26 December: Dominic Kemp Boxing Day Run Off, 10am start. Saturday 27 December:  Going to go to Wheaton Aston to either race or watch! So please do your own thing. There’s sessions at Wolves and Tipton for those that want one.  Sunday: 9.30am run from Tettenhall Pool car park. Tuesday 30 December : Cranmere Avenue, warmed up and ready to go, 12.30pm. DAY TIME SESSION Session: 8–10 half miles off 80 seconds recovery. Quantity and pace depend...

Great runs at the Telford 10k today by Alex Kelly, Alex Blair and Paul Marson. Not the easiest of courses to get right but they did themselves proud.  Don’t forget we’ve got the Boxing Day Dominic Kemp Handicap. This is for us, friends, family and also non club members are all welcomes. A lot of you are doing The Turkey Trot on Sunday so I’ll see you out and about on the course. But for those that want a session I’ll put one on.  Tuesday:    Warmed up and ready to go for 6.50pm Sabrina Road. 8 mins tempo followed by 10 x 500m off 75 secs recovery.  Saturday: warmed up and ready to go at 9.30am back to Sabrina Road 3 x 8 mins off 90 secs followed by 6 x 30 secs strides

Last orders before Christmas people : get you kit orders in. Let me know what you want.  This week a lot of us are racing over the weekend, so we’ll be getting some shorter speed work in on Tuesday to give you an easier week and help you race well. The following weeks will then consist of Tuesday road sessions and Saturdays that mix cross-country work with some road reps. Saturday was a huge success with TRX x Andy Bentley, and it was great to see the positivity. It was also good to see people who are usually rivals in races putting in a shift together and realising how much you can get out of working with others. Training with different people is one of the best ways to build confidence and lift your mojo when motivation dips. It can also break down the myth that certain runners are unbeatable. With that in mind, we’ll be looking to work with other coaches and clubs over the next 12 months. A massive well done to Derrick who ran a low-17 5k at the Battersea 5k this weekend ...
